Richard A.L. Piatt, a Columbus, Ohio native, earned his law degree from Capital University Law School in 1993, and has over 13 years of experience in the defense of OVI charges in the State of Ohio.
Known for the persistent manner with which he defends his clients, Mr. Piatt has successfully defendned hundreds of clients charged with OVI. Through his efforts on behalf of his clients, Mr. Piatt is responsible for causing the State of Ohio to alter certification procedures for enforcement officers throughout the State. Mr. Piatt has gained a reputation for raising new and unique defenses in OVI cases that set trends around the State for use by other defense lawyers. His previous prosecuting experience in various municipalities throughout Central Ohio has given him special insight to prosecution philosophies that assist him in defending OVI cases.
Mr. Piatt is certified as an instructor by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the administration of field sobriety tests. This certification allows Mr. Piatt to instruct law enforcement officers in the proper technique for the administration of field sobriety tests. In addition, National Patent Analytical Systems, Inc., (the manufacturer of the BAC Datamaster) has certified Mr. Piatt in the operation, diagnostic verification and calibration of the BAC Datamaster Breath Alcohol Testing Instrument, the most commonly used breath testing instrument in Ohio.
Mr. Piatt is often called upon to speak at seminars relating to OVI defense as well as the national and local media regarding issues relating to OVI.
